The first Greek Island that my husband and I visited on our Greece Honeymoon was beautiful Milos. Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Milos is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by travelers seeking a unique Greek island experience! Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors like Santorini and Mykonos, Milos boasts a charm and beauty all its own, with stunning beaches, picturesque villages, and fascinating geological formations. It was the perfect stop on our Greek island hopping honeymoon!
How to Get to Milos
We took a short 45 minute flight from Athens. Milos has a small airport, the Milos Island National Airport (MLO), located near the town of Trypiti. Flights to Milos are available from Athens International Airport (ATH) operated by both scheduled airlines and seasonal charter flights. The flight from Athens to Milos takes around 30 to 45 minutes. During the peak tourist season, there may be direct flights to Milos from other Greek islands as well.
If you are coming from another island, you may want to arrive on the Ferry! Ferries are the most common mode of transportation to Milos, especially from other Greek islands and the mainland. The port of Piraeus in Athens serves as the main hub for ferries to Milos. Ferry routes from Piraeus to Milos are frequent, with multiple departures each day, especially during the peak tourist season. There are also ferry connections to Milos from other nearby islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete.
Make sure to book your ferry tickets or flights to Milos in advance, especially during the high season, to secure your preferred travel dates and avoid last-minute hassles. Keep in mind that ferry schedules can be subject to change due to weather conditions, so it’s a good idea to check the ferry companies’ websites for updates before your departure.
When you arrive in Milos, transportation options such as taxis, buses, and car rentals are available to take you to your accommodation or explore the island further.
We rented a car on the island so that we could drive around and explore. It is one of the smaller islands, but our hotel was located in Myatakas and it was not in walking distance to the tourist attractions.
When to go to Milos
My husband and I went to Milos at the end of July. We were worried about going at the hight of peak season, but we loved it! It was definitely HOT! The temperatures reached 90+ degrees most days in the afternoon. But we did not have any problems with crowds.
The best time to visit Milos depends on your preferences and what you want to experience during your trip. Here’s a breakdown of the different seasons and what they offer:
Spring (April to June):
Spring is a fantastic time to visit Milos if you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds. The weather is pleasantly warm, perfect for exploring the island without the intense heat of summer. Spring also brings beautiful wildflowers blooming across the island, adding to its natural beauty.
Summer (July to August):
Summer is the peak tourist season in Milos, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. This is the best time for beach lovers, as the sea is warm and ideal for swimming. The island can get quite crowded during this time, especially in July and August, so be prepared for higher prices and more tourists.
Fall (September to October):
Fall is another great time to visit Milos, as the weather remains warm and the crowds start to thin out. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, and you can enjoy the beaches with fewer people. September, in particular, is a fantastic month for visiting, as the weather is still summery but with fewer tourists.
Winter (November to March):
Winter is the quietest time on the island, with many businesses closed and fewer tourists around. While the weather can be cooler and rainier during this time, it’s still possible to visit Milos and enjoy its beauty. Keep in mind, a lot of the seasonal employees and business may close for the Winter.
Now that you’ve arrived you are ready to relax at the beach and enjoy all that Milos has to offer. My husband and I stayed at Domes White Coast Milos and it was one of our favorite hotels we have ever stayed at. It is a luxury adults only hotel with a romantic and relaxing vibe. 5 Romantic Things to do in Milos for Couples
1. Catamaran Cruise
Milos is a geological wonderland, with dramatic rock formations, volcanic landscapes, and hidden sea caves waiting to be explored. The island’s volcanic past has left behind a landscape unlike any other, with surreal shapes and colors that will leave you in awe. Don’t miss the chance to explore the sea caves of Kleftiko by boat!
On our first day we did a half day morning cruise out of Kleftiko. We booked this tour through Viator, for $144 a person. It included a buffet style lunch, beverages, and snorkel equipment! We had an amazing time exploring the caves of Kleftiko and adventuring around the waters of Milos. We we able to see a ton of fish and swim through the caves. Although the boat was a bit rocky at times, it was one of my favorite things we did on the trip. Book our exact tour here.
2. Visit Sarakiniko Beach!
This is not your typical beach. It feels as though you have landed on the moon and is one of the most unique beaches in Greece! This beach is known for its white cliffs, rock formations and bright blue waters. The white rock was actually formed by a volcanic eruption!
We drove our rental car to the beach and there was free parking available! However, as the day went on the parking spots filled up quickly, so I would definitely recommend going early in the morning if you are traveling during peak season! If you aren’t renting a car, I would suggest getting dropped off by a taxi or taking the local bus.
We went at the end of July, and it was HOT. If you are planning on staying here for a few hours definitely pack water bottles and some snacks. There is no shade and the beach is not in walking distance to any amenities near by, so bring everything you need! (including sunscreen!)
While this is not your typical beach, you are still able to swim in the water or lay on a towel to enjoy the sun. We saw a ton of people jumping off of the rocks and swimming in the coves. Be careful there is a lot of walking on the rocks and some of it can be very steep!
Overall, Sarakiniko is a MUST SEE on your trip to Milos!
3. Grab a Sunset Drink
Grab a drink and watch the sunset at the Utopia Cafe! Utopia Cafe Restaurant is situated in the heart of Plaka and offers panoramic views of the island. It specializes in Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. This cafe sits on the water overlooking the sunset. We arrived at 5:30 PM and we caught one of the last spots to watch the sunset. Enjoy drinks and light bites here for the perfect sunset spot!
4. Enjoy an authentic dinner at O! Hamas! Tavern
This local dinner spot is located right beside the beach in Adamas. The menus are all handwritten in Greek and the ambiance makes you feel like you are in a romantic garden. This family owned restaurant makes you feel like you are eating in Yia Yia’s kitchen. Be prepared to wait as it this is a popular spot! We grabbed a drink and sat at the beach across the street and watched the sunset while we wait.
The tavern specializes in traditional Greek cuisine, offering a variety of dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Expect to find classic Greek dishes such as grilled meats, fresh seafood, Greek salads, moussaka, and more. The atmosphere at “O Hamos” is typically relaxed and welcoming, perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal with friends or family.
5. Dinner in Trypiti
Trypiti is a charming village on the island of Milos, known for its traditional Greek atmosphere and picturesque surroundings. While Trypiti itself is relatively small, there are several excellent dining options nearby. This area was beautiful to walk around with lots of shops and restaurants.
We had a delicious dinner with a stunning sunset view at Barriello! Here you can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine while enjoying the stunning sunset view and romantic atmosphere. We had the concierge book our reservation here, and (we think) is the reason we think we got the perfect sunset view table.
This restaurant is a long walk up a hill, so we parked our rental car at the bottom of a hill in a communal parking lot.
Milos is a true hidden gem in the Aegean Sea, offering travelers a chance to discover the beauty and charm of a traditional Greek island without the crowds.
