My Favorite Credit Cards

My Favorite Travel Credit Cards and How I Use Them

As a frequent traveler, I’ve tested out a lot of credit cards to help maximize my rewards points. From free flights to hotel stays, using the right credit card is one of the easiest ways to save money on travel. Below, I’ve listed some of my favorite travel credit cards, along with how I personally use them to maximize rewards and perks.

1. Chase Sapphire Preferred®: Perfect for Beginners

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® was my very first travel credit card, and it’s still one of my top recommendations for beginners. It comes with an excellent sign-up bonus, a reasonable annual fee, and flexible Ultimate Rewards Points® that can be used for a variety of travel expenses.

  • Key Benefits:
    • 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months.
    • 5X points on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.
    • 3X points on dining.
    • 2X points on other travel purchases.
    • $50 annual hotel credit on bookings made through Chase.

I primarily use Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to book stays at Hyatt Hotels—it’s one of the best value redemptions for me. If you’re just starting with travel rewards, this card is a great option.

2. American Express Gold Card®: My Go-To for Free Flights

The American Express Gold Card® is one of my favorite credit cards for earning points quickly, especially if you dine out or shop at grocery stores often. While the annual fee is higher, the rewards I’ve earned more than make up for it.

  • Key Benefits:
    • 4X points at restaurants and on groceries.
    • 3X points on flights booked directly with airlines.
    • $120 annual dining credit ($10/month).

This card allows me to earn tons of points from everyday purchases, which I redeem for free flights. If you’re a foodie or love dining out, this card is perfect for maximizing your points.

3. Capital One Venture X: Premium Perks for Frequent Travelers

The Capital One Venture X is one of my newest additions. While it has a higher annual fee ($395), the benefits it offers make it worth every penny. I use this card for almost everything.

  • Key Benefits:
    • $300 annual travel credit for travel-related expenses.
    • 10,000 bonus points annually.
    • 2X points on every purchase.
    • TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit.

What I love most about the Venture X card is that it earns 2X points on every purchase, which makes it perfect for expenses that don’t fall under specific bonus categories like dining or groceries. I used my sign-up bonus to book flights to Europe!

4. World of Hyatt Personal Credit Card®: Earning Free Nights

If you love staying at Hyatt Hotels like I do, the World of Hyatt Personal Credit Card® is a must-have. This card helps me earn bonus points with each stay and unlock perks like free night certificates.

  • Key Benefits:
    • 9X points per $1 spent at Hyatt properties.
    • 2X points on dining and airfare purchases.
    • 1 free night certificate annually (worth more than the $95 annual fee!).

With the World of Hyatt Credit Card, I’ve earned numerous free night certificates that I’ve used at some of the best Hyatt properties. This card is ideal if you’re looking to rack up points for hotel stays.
